Never again would you feel the sun and wind on your skin, unmediated. Indeed, you would probably be living underground at first, in a windowless cave, only this time there would be no wild horses to sketch on the ceiling. Cabin fever might set in quickly on Mars, and it might be contagious. Quarters would be tight. Governments would be fragile. Reinforcements would be seven months away. Colonies might descend into civil war, anarchy or even cannibalism, given the potential for scarcity.

Community Will Have to Continue On Without Shirley

There’s so much sadness in this story: Nicole Yvette Brown has announced that she will not be joining the show on Yahoo! in order to take care of her ailing father. That’s just heartbreaking on every level.

Brown to TV Guide:

My dad needs daily care and he needs me. The idea of being away 16 hours a day for five months, I couldn’t do it. It was a difficult decision for me to make, but I had to choose my dad.

… [Dan Harmon] has been so wonderful about it all. He told me, ‘Yvette, I’m praying for your dad.’

… I’m still Community’s biggest fan and I’ll still live Tweet episodes. It’s very bittersweet. I can take care of my dad but won’t be with my TV family. I don’t want the fans to worry; it’s going to be fine. Greendale is the heart of the show, not any particular character. Even if characters come and go, the heart of Greendale remains.

Brown also said she’s left on good terms and is open to making a guest appearance, it’s just that being a regular on a single-camera show is not possible for her current circumstances.

PayPal to go at it alone, split from eBay

Online auctioneer eBay and online money transfer service PayPal are to become two separate companies, with the goal of getting PayPal publicly traded in 2015.

The eBay-owned and California-based online money giant PayPal will become a separately traded company by the middle of next year, according to a statement published on PayPal’s website on Tuesday morning.

“The company expects to complete the transaction as a tax-free spin-off in the second half of 2015, subject to market, regulatory and certain other conditions,” the statement says.

The move was largely advocated by investor Carl Icahn, who has long lobbied for a PayPal spinoff. According to the press release, PayPal revenue grew 19 percent over the last year to $7.2 billion. EBay’s revenue of $9.9 billion is still bigger, but expanding at a slower pace.

California governor likely to approve statewide ban on plastic bags

The governor of California, Jerry Brown, has indicated that he is likely to sign a bill imposing the nation’s first statewide ban on single-use plastic bags as a way to address litter, primarily in waterways.

SB270 is one of the last major bills pending Tuesday, the deadline for the governor to sign or veto the hundreds of bills sent to him during the final weeks of the legislative session.

The legislation will prohibit large grocery stores from carrying single-use bags starting in July 2015, expanding to smaller stores the year after. It also allows businesses to charge 10-cent fees to provide customers with reusable or paper bags.

More than 100 cities and counties, including San Francisco and Los Angeles, have their own plastic bag bans. State Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Los Angeles, says their successful implementation provided momentum for a statewide prohibition.

Apple Watch steals the spotlight during Paris Fashion Week

Huge crowds — and some of the world’s most sought-after models — greeted the Apple Watch during its Tuesday debut in Paris, as the wrist-worn device captivated the attention of the glitterati in town for Paris Fashion Week.

The display was a strictly hands-off affair for the public, but Apple seems to have made some exceptions for some of its more high-profile fans. Supermodel Karlie Kloss Instagrammed a photo of herself wearing what appears to be the Apple Watch Sport with a white band, tagging it “#iWant.”

Madame Figaro Editor-in-Chief Jean-Seb Stehli tweeted that he found the Apple Watch “vey [sic] cool once you try it on.” La MJC co-founder Michael Dupouy, a famous name in the “street style” movement, called it “very nice.”

The same courtesy was presumably extended to Vogue editor Anna Wintour and Chanel creative head Karl Lagerfeld — who were given a personal introduction to the Apple Watch by Jony Ive earlier in the day — though no photos of them wearing the device have circulated.

The public faced a more daunting wait, however. Lines extended around the block, and the interior of host boutique Colette was packed with eager viewers. Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a tweet that it was “amazing to see the excited crowds today in Paris to preview Apple Watch for the first time.”
